Is Your Nervous System Making Marriage Harder?

Ever said something you later wished you could take back because it came out much harsher than you meant?
Or blanked out in the middle of a conflict, totally forgetting what you wanted to say?

Or had your partner's tone of voice affect you so badly that you still felt it hours later?
If so, your nervous system is likely a big culprit.
When your nervous system goes into threat mode, your brain no longer operates from its wisest, clearest place, and your inner world gets discombobulated in all sorts of ways.
For a highly sensitive woman, not only does this often happen more easily than for non-hsps, it makes your relationship so much harder here, there, and everywhere.
So you want to know if this is happening for you— is your nervous system making marriage harder? Take a moment and notice if any of these sound familiar:
You get disproportionately aggravated by your husband—even when you can't quite explain why.
Small things—clutter, noise, chewing, interruptions—feel way more irritating than they seem like they should.
You have a hard time fully relaxing—even when nothing is particularly wrong. There's often a subtle sense of tension, restlessness, or being “on” that you can't quite put your finger on.
You don't feel like you have much left to give. Even connection with your husband can feel like one more demand on an already overloaded system.
One difficult interaction can hijack the rest of your day. Even after the conversation is over, you’re still thinking about it, feeling it in your body, and having trouble shifting your attention to anything else.
You find yourself holding things in because you're not sure you can handle your husband's reaction if it isn't a good one.
You react to your husband or kids more strongly than you want to, even when you aren't in the middle of an obvious conflict.
You often feel stressed, frazzled, irritable, on edge, anxious, or easily annoyed in general.
You sometimes look at your spouse and just feel numb, like you're cut off from the love you hope you still have deep down in that big heart of yours.
You often feel like you're operating with less emotional bandwidth than you should have. Little things take more out of you than they seem like they should, and by the end of the day there's not much left for yourself—or your marriage.
If you recognize some of these in yourself (even just a couple), it may very well mean your nervous system is frequently, or even chronically, in a state of dysregulation.
And it IS taking a toll on your happiness in general—and on the connection, love, ease, and joy you're experiencing in your marriage.
Here's the thing: you can't simply think or willpower your way out of this, because your nervous system operates at a deeper level than conscious thought—and when it's activated, it easily overrides what you consciously know and want to do.
The good news is that you can learn to change this when you work with your nervous system at the level of the body, as we do together in Foundations of Emotional Well-being for HSPs (FEW).
You can learn to recognize when your nervous system is getting activated, help it come back toward safety and steadiness, and build more capacity to stay grounded and open all day long, even in moments that used to completely throw you off.
Which will change SO much for you:
You’ll have more emotional bandwidth for your actual life. Things won’t take quite so much out of you, and you’ll have more of yourself available for the people and things you care about.
You’ll feel more settled and at ease in your own body, with more capacity to handle the inevitable stresses and frustrations of everyday life without them taking over.
You’ll have more access to your clarity, your confidence, your warmth, your sense of humor, and your perspective—and to the love you actually feel for your people.
You’ll be able to find your words and stay more open and connected when things get hard, rather than losing access to the part of you that knows what you actually want to say or how you want to respond.
You’ll feel more like your real loving self… and be more fully present in your life and in your marriage.
And you’ll have more room for what you actually want in your relationship: ease, affection, playfulness, desire, connection, and genuine enjoyment of your partner.
That's the kind of change we create inside FEW (enrolling now).
Because FEW does much more than give you new insights; it helps you actually change what happens inside you so that you have more choice—and more access to your bright-hearted self—all day, every day, and especially in the moments that matter.
Our next FEW cohort begins October 5.
